BLUE DACNIS
SAÍ-AZUL (AS KNOWN IN BRAZIL)
Dacnis cayana
The Blue Dacnis, also known as Turquoise Honeycreeper, is a bird species that
stands out due to its beauty and uniqueness. It has predominantly bright blue
plumage, with wings and tail in darker shades. It measures approximately 5,11
inches in length and weighs an average of 0,6 ounces. This species tends to inhabit
Brazilian cerrado areas, riparian forests, and forest edges. Additionally, it is a social
bird, living in flocks of up to 20 individuals.
It feeds on flower nectar, insects, and fruits. It particularly enjoys the fruits of
tapiá or iricuruna trees. The Blue Dacnis reproduces in spring and summer. Its nest
takes the shape of a deep cup, made of thin fibers, placed 16 to 22,9 feet above
the ground, nestled among the outer leaves of a tree. It lays 2 or 3 eggs, with the
female taking on the task of nest construction, while the male protects the family
from intruders.
It is spotted in all regions of Brazil. It is also found from Honduras to Panama and
in almost all countries of South America.
